Rare June rain smashes records in Bay Area
The pounding rain that inundated the Bay Area Saturday set plenty of records and put the kibosh on plenty of barbecues, beach treks, Little League games and bicycle rides.
They were replaced by spinouts, fender benders, flooding, road closures and other winter-like mishaps that nobody thought they would be dealing with at this time of year. There were no serious incidents related to the rain, officials said, but quite a few folks were undoubtedly saying “What in tarnation?” or something of that sort.
By 3 p.m. Saturday, 1.12 inches of rain had fallen in San Francisco, smashing the record of 0.49 of an inch set for this date in 1934. Records also fell in Oakland, San Jose and many other Bay Area cities, but the final rain totals, which are measured from midnight to midnight, were not yet available.
